Airports

There is a local airport at Oxford, but the nearest major airport is London Heathrow. London Gatwick is almost as close. Heathrow and Gatwick both have excellent rail and road links to all parts of the UK.

By train

The nearest train station to the Bach Centre is Cholsey - but it's a small station served by slower trains, and there are no taxis. Getting from Cholsey to the the Centre isn't easy unless you are being met - or have a bicycle.

Most visitors get off the train at Didcot Parkway, a mainline station about six miles from the Centre. Frequent trains run from Didcot to and from London Paddington, Slough, Reading and Oxford, with connections to all parts of the UK including the airports. The National Rail Enquiries web site will help you plan your route.

Once you get to Didcot Parkway you will find a row of taxis waiting outside to pick up passengers. Most of the local cab companies know the Bach Centre. The taxi ride can be expensive, however (15 or more each way), so you might prefer to wait for a bus. There is an hourly bus service from Didcot Parkway station that goes through Brightwell-cum-Sotwell on its way to Wallingford.

By car from London

  • Take the M4 west out of London and turn off at junction 8/9, signposted to Henley on Thames
  • Follow the road into Henley, turn right at the traffic lights in town and take the road to Wallingford
  • Keep on this road all the way into and then through Wallingford, passing straight on over a mini-roundabout next to a pub and continuing out of town
  • At the roundabout take the second exit straight on towards Didcot, but almost immediately take the next turn on the left (signed to Brightwell-cum-Sotwell)
  • Follow the road around to the right and when you come to a fork in the road take the right-hand fork
  • Pass the church on your left and again follow the road around to the right - you will see the Bach Centre right in front of you

By car from the North

  • Take the M1 to Northampton, and then the A43 towards Oxford
  • Just north of Oxford join the Ring Road in either direction until you reach the A4074 road signed to Henley/Maidenhead
  • After about ten miles you reach Shillingford: turn right at the roundabout, heading into Wallingford on the A329
  • In Wallingford, turn right at the traffic lights and go straight ahead over the mini-roundabout next to the pub and out of town

Parking

Parking is very limited at the Bach Centre. Parking for one or two cars is usually available for short visits but please park away from the Centre if possible, being careful not to block lanes or access to people's properties. Do not park in Datchet Green as residents are elderly and they and their carers need easy access.
